The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT & PF) Fairbanks International Airport (FAI)

is recruiting for a dedicated Airport Police and Fire Officer 1/2 to help us Keep Alaska Moving!

What You Will Be Doing

Fairbanks International Airport Police and Fire Officers are responsible for all law enforcement, firefighting, and first responder medical assistance at the Fairbanks International Airport. Airport Police and Fire officers are State of Alaska certified law enforcement officers. They face a wide variety of law enforcement responsibilities, from enforcing municipal and state laws, to assisting the traveling public, as well as networking with and assisting a myriad of diverse agencies. Special emphasis is placed on supporting the regulations and policies of the Transportation Security Administration. Providing a "community-oriented service" is valued and emphasized. Officers are the primary law enforcement response for the terminals and airport roadways

The incumbent receives training at a State certified police academy and field training with senior officers. All requirements of the Alaska Police Standards Council must be met for certification. Employees are enrolled in the DPS Academy in Sitka. The employee must also successfully pass the State of Alaska Firefighter I, Firefighter II, Aircraft Rescue Firefighter, Hazardous Materials Operations, and Emergency Trauma Technician certifications. All training is paid for by the Department and the employee receives pay while in training. Officers will work shift work throughout their career.

Airport Police & Fire Officer 1:

Eligible to obtain a basic certificate as a police officer issued by the Alaska Police Standards Council and as a fire fighter issued by the Alaska Fire Standards Council.

At The Time Of Hire Applicants Must:

Be a citizen of the United States.

AND

Be 21 years of age or older.

AND

Possess a high school diploma recognized by a state; diploma from a home school program recognized or certified by a state or by a local school district within a state as having met the state's graduation requirements; or have passed a General Education Development (GED) test.

AND

Possess a valid driver's license.

Special Note:

This class requires the use of a firearm. In accordance with the federal Omnibus Consolidated Appropriations Act of 1997 (PL-104-208), if you have been convicted of a misdemeanor crime of domestic violence, you may not hold a position in this job class.

Airport Police & Fire Officer 2:

Possession of or eligible to obtain a basic certificate as a police officer issued by the Alaska Police Standards Council.

AND

Possess Fire Fighter 1 and 2 certification issued by the Alaska Fire Standards Council;

AND

Successful completion of an intensive departmental law enforcement and aircraft rescue firefighting training program.

At The Time Of Initial Hire Applicants Must:

Be a citizen of the United States.

AND

Be 21 years of age or older within one year of hire.

AND

RECRUITMENT PROCESS

Applicants are required to pass a written examination to continue with the hiring process. Applicants who fail the written test will be disqualified from this recruitment. The test is general aptitude in nature and has a pass/fail grade.

The applicant, including out-of-state applicants, will be responsible for their travel to and from the examination site. Testing will either be conducted in Fairbanks and/or remotely vial online resources.

After taking the written test, applicants are required to pass a physical agility test. The test has a pass/fail grade.

WRITTEN TEST EXEMPTION – LATERAL APPLICANT

To meet lateral requirements and be exempt from the written test, you must have twelve months work experience as a police officer AND possession of an active police officer certificate issued by a jurisdiction inside or/ outside the State of Alaska and recognized by the Alaska Police Standards Council. Applicants are required to complete an online application, a written application packet, a written exam, a physical agility test, an oral board interview, a polygraph test and/or a voice stress analysis test, background investigation, psychological written test and interview, and medical examination. AIRPORT SECURITY BADGE

Candidates for this position must be eligible for an airport identification badge in accordance with Transportation Security Administration (TSA) regulations (49 CFR 1542) which requires fingerprinting and a criminal background check. The successful applicant must pass a fingerprint-based criminal history record check as well as a comprehensive background investigation, along with a Transportation Security Administration Security Threat Assessment.

APSIN CLEARANCE

Candidates for this position must obtain and maintain Alaska Public Safety Information Network (APSIN) certification, which requires fingerprinting and a criminal background check. A felony conviction disqualifies a person from APSIN certification. Misdemeanor convictions may also disqualify a person from APSIN certification. The successful applicant must pass a fingerprint-based criminal history record check as well as a comprehensive background investigation.

FLEXIBLY STAFFED

This position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at either the Airport Police & Fire Officer 1 or Airport Police & Fire Officer 2 level, depending on the applicant's training and/or experience. The full range of salaries is listed above. Starting salary will be determined by the level the position is hired at. If filled at Level 1, promotion to the Level 2 will occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training, as well as the applicant meeting the minimum qualifications of the higher job class.
