Job Description

We’re looking for a talented freelance character concept artist to help define the visual identity of characters for an early-stage horror game prototype. This role is focused on creating memorable, unsettling, and emotionally charged character designs that sell tone, mystery, and dread.

Time Commitment: Ad hoc, project-based.

What You’ll Create

• Character concepts and full-body explorations
• Costume, silhouette, and shape language studies
• Facial expression, mood, and personality explorations
• Iterations on horror-themed character designs, from subtle unease to fully disturbing
• Presentation-ready character sheets that help establish visual identity and direction

Key Responsibilities

• Review mood boards, references, and creative direction, then propose character design approaches that align with the project’s brand and tone.
• Create original character concepts from scratch, including shape exploration, costume design, pose, and personality.
• Take rough written ideas, narrative themes, or loose visual prompts and turn them into polished, compelling character designs.
• Explore multiple directions quickly while maintaining a cohesive horror aesthetic.
• Iterate based on feedback and help refine the cast’s overall visual language and identity.

Required Qualifications

• Strong portfolio showcasing character concept art, ideally with dark, atmospheric, horror, or psychological themes.
• Strong fundamentals in anatomy, silhouette, costume design, lighting, color, and visual storytelling.
• Ability to communicate personality, narrative, and emotional tone through character design.
• Clear communicator who can work from loose direction, hit deadlines, and handle iteration well.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience creating character concepts for games, film, or entertainment projects, especially in horror.
• Ability to design across a range of styles, from grounded and believable to surreal and disturbing.
• Experience creating turnarounds, callout sheets, and exploration pages for production or pitch use.
• Proficiency in industry-standard tools such as Photoshop, Procreate, Blender, or similar.
