Duties and Responsibilities

  • Under the direction of the Principal Investigators (PIs), serve as a Parents and Community Coordinator for extramurally funded project(s) related to improving STEM education and intervention for varied heritage PreK-5 students with and without disabilities.
  • Develop, implement, and assess culturally responsive parent curriculum and workshops in STEM and learning activities that contribute to best practices in the field.
  • Review, refine and copy edit existing project developed lessons, activities and other programming.
  • Develop, lead/co-lead and teach math and science workshops, training and programs to teachers, parents and other community members.
  • Develop and implement recruitment programs and activities for schools and families/parents.
  • Work with partner and contracted organizations to plan and carry out STEM enrichment summer camps and STEM-focused community service learning events.
  • Participate in evaluation activities and data collection.
  • Maintain a research/scholarly profile related to STEM and community work as a profession.
  • Contribute to the department, university, profession and community through serving on committees, volunteering as a journal reviewer, etc.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master’s degree from a college or university of recognized standing in Education, Special Education related services (e.g. Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Audiology, Speech, Lanauge Pathology) or a STEM education field or a related field.
  • Accuracy, alertness, and adaptability.
  • Professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.
  • Experience developing hands-on lessons, activities, or curriculum for parents and community members.
  • Experience conducting STEM hands-on activities within school, afterschool, or community center setting.
  • Experience conducting professional development for parents and families.
  • Experience working with students with disabilities and wide-ranging needs.
  • Experience coordinating a group of varied people for meetings, collaborative work, or other activities.
  • Basic understanding of educational or social science research practices pertaining to research implementation, data collection and dissemination.
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently on assigned tasks, prioritize tasks, and see tasks through completion.
  • Availability to work outside of the normal working hours, including evening, weekends, and holidays, as needed.
  • Ability to travel independently and in a timely manner to various geographical locations. Requirement may be fulfilled by a valid Hawai`i Driver's license (Class 3), comparable driver's license, or other means of transportation which meets position needs.

Desirable Qualifications

  • Demonstrated teaching experience of elementary grade level students with disabilities or those who are struggling learners.
  • Experience teaching or conducting outreach STEM activities to various local heritages.
  • Experience differentiating activities to meet the needs of diverse learners.
  • Experience with supporting parents and families with children with special health care needs.
  • Course work in or solid understanding of Hawaii history, culture, and language.
  • Familiarity and experience in collaborating with schools and organizations in Hawaii.
  • Demonstrated understanding and application of effective parent engagement strategies to support their children.
  • Experience in writing technical reports, journal articles, and competitive grant applications.
  • Experience working on a federally funded educational research project.
